The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is a non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety in the home, school, and workplace. To commemorate National Electrical Safety Month, ESFI spearheads an annual campaign to educate key audiences about the steps that can be taken in order to reduce the number of electrically-related fires, fatalities, injuries, and property loss. ESFI's National Electrical Safety Month 2019 campaign features a comprehensive collection of new and updated resources to help facilitate an effective electrical safety awareness campaign for your community, organization, school, or family. Included is an extensive collection of useful fact sheets and related safety tips, plus templates and tools you can use to promote electrical safety and National Electrical Safety Month in your home, school, community, or workplace. They have even provided media outreach materials and social media content to further spread our life-saving campaign messages.
In celebration of Electrical Safety Month 2019, ESFI has announced the launch of the of its National Electrical Safety Month resources. This year's theme "Electrical Safety During Natural Disasters," focuses on the importance preparing, weathering, and rebuilding after natural disasters.
While we can't prevent natural disasters, we can ensure our businesses are electrically safe before and after the storm. Practicing electrical safety and being prepared can lead to a smooth recovery and an opportunity to renovate the electrical efficiency of your business.
In the Event of a Natural Disaster:
Create emergency shutdown and start up procedures.
Turn off power source.
Charge all electronic communication devices.
Unplug and elevate electronics.
After the Storm:
Avoid flooded areas.
Always use a GFCI and transfer switch with portable generators.
Have a qualified electrician inspect any submerged or water damaged electrical equipment.
Prepare for Future Storms:
Microgrids can prevent long term power outages by providing localized generation and storage.
Smart grids provide smart distribution along with self-healing and autonomous restoration of power.
Having energy sources and major equipment on higher floors may prevent water damage during future storms.
